When the activity of a drug wants to be studied, an assay will be performed. When the effect on a living specimen is to be determined, it’s called a bioassay. These are extremely important procedures in the development of new drugs in the pharmaceutical industry. There are both quantal and graded bioassays. Quantal is basically when the only thing that matters is that there was a response. The actual amount of response isn’t important. Graded bioassays are for when the actual amount of response is important and measured. Similar assays are dilution assays and cell assays.
How would you feel if someone told you that you could improve your hearing? Do you sometimes have trouble hearing when loved ones or close family try to talk to you? If you think this may be a problem for you then you would probably listen right away when you hear someone mentioning the fact that hearing can be improved. The fact of the matter is that hearing can’t really be improved per se, but you can use certain gadgets to greatly improve the quality of your life. No longer will you have to ask everyone to repeat themselves when they are talking to you! What are these miracle gadgets you ask? I’m simply talking about getting the best digital hearing aids you can possibly buy for your money.
What should we classify as actual bad hearing? Sometimes it’s not really your bad hearing that’s the problem. Sometimes people just don’t speak very clearly when they talk to you so it’s a matter of them not communicating clearly enough. When people are tired or upset, they tend to mush together their words or “slur” their words when talking to you. Also when a friend or family member is drinking or on drugs they often will be harder to understand. It’s a common mistake to chalk this up to poor hearing but more often than not it’s the fault of the person who is not speaking clearly enough to you. Don’t get yourself down about it!
The worst scenario is if you completely lose hearing in an ear. Hearing aids can only do so much to help you. For example, if you lose 90% of the hearing in one ear, that 10% can still be amplified to help you hear near normal volume of things around you. That’s basically how these hearing aids work; they amplify the sound up to a normal volume so it seems like you never actually lost your hearing at all. The problem with losing 100% of your hearing is that you don’t have any hearing to amplify. 0% hearing left, multiplied by any value, will still be 0% hearing. Hopefully your math isn’t too rusty to figure that one out. Once you get to completely deaf, it’s time to give up and focus on the other ear. Hopefully you didn’t go deaf in both ears at the same time, which would be the case for certain specific cases of audio trauma.
How could you lose hearing in both ears? When losing hearing due to old age, you tend to lose it at different rates in each ear. There are differing environmental factors that lead to this, like dust or dirt getting into your ears. Some other things include if some really loud noise gets played into your ear. If you attended a lot of rock concerts as a youth, this would definitely contribute to increasing the likelihood of losing your hearing at a younger age than if you hadn’t gone to any of those rock concerts. Also if you listen to music really loud, chances are you are decreasing the life span of your ears and their hearing capabilities. It’s definitely something to consider, to keep your loud noises to a minimum.
